I was born in January 1971, so I was a ripe age to go through the (what I NOW know was a) nuclear scare between Reegan Thatcher and Breshnev. Regular TV adverts about how, in case of nuclear attack, to put your head netween your legs and kiss your arse goodbye.

The concept of the 3/4 minute warning has never really left me since, and at that young age, I quickly learnt to think Fuck it! Might as well carry on enjoying myself until that level shit actually happens, when there's not much you can do about it anyway. That works pretty well, for me.

So despite the news, life is good.

If it was someone who felt guilty about drinking it certainly wasn't an Irishman.

I've never really thought it was a IRA supporter who left it.

I assumed it was some kind of lunatic obsessive who felt guilty about drinking.

Gph

I think that kind of thing was rife back then with loads of their supporters living in north London. Eventually they just took away the bins. I Don't think they have ever really been replaced.

As a dispatch rider in the 80s I heard loads of bombs go off, the singer in my band was a furniture mover for Harrods when that bomb went off, the commissionair at Norton Rose who I knew to say hello to was killed in the Bishopsgate bomb went off and I was driving my old man's car on the Limehouse link when the Docklands bomb blew up. A load of burning debris hit the car and shit the life out of me.

That's why I get a bit touchy when some nimrod thinks it's okay to put his bag on the seat behind him and sit with his back to it.

I was amazed that the response was so low-key.

I guess they thought no warning = not likely to be a bomb.

That didn't even hold for some of the IRA campaigns, let alone now.

Re: Stratford Incident Now
So no bomb squad were called? That is pretty shocking that they would put a life on the line like that if it's true.

I guess that must have been the 80s?

Re: Stratford Incident Now
chim - people are weird.

I was in Highbury and Islington Station at the start of one of the IRA campaigns in London, and I noticed this neatly wrapped, unopened parcel in one of the bins.

I thought this was odd, and possibly even dodgy, so I alerted one of the station staff.

They called the Police and asked me to hang around in case I was a witness to something or other.

The Police sent a single Policewoman, who instructed everyone to stand at the other end of the platform, while she opened the parcel.

It turned out to contain an empty drinks bottle inside a box.

Who the fuck wraps their empties so carefully, and takes them to a station?

It was a fire alarm. No bag, no bearded men armed with books, not even a fight over Fruit Shoots. Plenty of knicker wetting screaming loons running over the disabled and old people to get out though.

Re: Stratford Incident Now
My MATE would do this on tube trains after 7/7... any Asian with a beard he'd go over and ask to look in their bag if they had one... never had a problem either

Re: Stratford Incident Now
I genuinely have never seen someone put their bag on the seat behind them then sit with their back to it on a bus. All I knew before I glanced inside the bag was how uncomfortable it made me feel as I was in the seat directly across from it.
